by Josh Principio, Information Officer III

The CWC, under the National Network to End Violence Against Children, conducted a webinar entitled “Big Little Steps: Actions Made to Conquer VAC during COVID-19” on September 16, 2020.

Among the Resource Persons of the said webinar that received over 1000 registrations on Zoom and around 700 live viewers on Facebook are Dr. Bernadette Madrid, Executive Director, Child Protection Network; Ms. Miramel Garcia-Laxa, Sectoral Programs Division Chief of the Program Management Bureau, Department of Social Welfare and Development; Dr. Liane Alampay, Professor, Ateneo de Manila University; Atty. Gil Anthony Aquino, Child Rights Senior Officer, Department of Education; and Mr. Allan Lee Nunez, Representative, Joining Forces Alliance on VAC, with the special participation of Ms. Jasmin Curtis-Smith, Celebrity Ambassador, World Vision Philippines.

Discussions in the webinar anchored on The Philippine Plan of Action to End Violence against Children and highlighted the government and civil society’s response to the alarming issue of VAC that has been extremely aggravated by the implications brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Below are the key takeaways from the webinar:

  • Innovations such as the provision of high internet access, public service announcements, booklet distribution with the relief goods, and conduct of webinars are being introduced.
  • Threats not only come from outside of the home, but also from within through practices that foster violence and abuse.
  • The need to empower the children and youth to participate in the elimination of VAC.
  • The government and the civil society shall prioritize the best interests of children, especially during these unprecedented times.
